[ale] bash script with su

OK. More weirdness. The big script has multiple locations where su -l
-c "foo" is used. Foo is always a string of commands &&'ed together
(cool! new verb! double-ampersanded). ALL of the other iterations work
EXCEPT those that touch postgresql process. Both steps that touch
postgresql init, creation, new user are run as postgres and a second
one is run as batadm to do the specific database installation for the
application. Those are the only ones that fail. the syntax is the same
for all su's. I'm betting there is something wrong with the postgresql
environment causing the failure.
