Not much help with Zeb's repair of his current scanner,
but if he or anyone else you know has a new, old or
antique scanner needing Linux software support to restore
it to functionality I can recommend VueScan.

A new 10th anniversary release, 8.5.11, is available
now and is offered as a free upgrade for owners of
previous versions.

While VueScan is not OSS and is no longer Free as
in beer for Linux, I think it is an excellent product
and worth the investment, plus a single license gives
you access to run all the platform versions, Linux
(Red Hat & Debian binaries), Mac (OSeX & OS9)
and others inclusive. Hamrick also provides a
"20 for 1" license discount bundle for educational
institutions, which is a great opportunity for
schools to extend the life of their existing scanner
equipment.

VueScan supports over 1,200 scanner and 180 camera
models over various USB, SCSI, Parallel and IEEE1394
(Firewire) interfaces. I have used the Linux version
back when it was free and it worked flawlessly with
my classic HP SCSI scanners. The full package is
available as trial download to test support for your
hardware and check out the features; purchasing a
license key serial number removes the watermarking
on saved images.

Linux Format gave VueScan a Newsdesk write up in
their July 2009 issue, which is where I got some
of my information.

Again, not OSS or Free Beer, but given the challenges
of supporting over a thousand proprietary scanner and
camera interfaces on multiple platforms, $40 for the
standard version and $80 for the pro version seems
extraordinarily reasonable. I'll be making that
investment myself if a large slide scanning job that
I have pending materializes.
