He is not wood... it is an extreme HPV infection.  He looks tree-ish, but

... which is the condition he suffers from.  It is a skin disorder that makes 
a person much more likely to contract cancer and other skin diseases such as 
HPV, which is what the "tree man" has.  The only difference between him and 
people you see in public who have warts on their hands/face/body is the fact 
that his body is incapable of controlling the HPV infection and so it grows 
wildly.
