Wait!  use 'aptitude' instead of 'apt'.  it will help you navigate the
dependencies easier.

if you don't want to use the ncurses interface just substitute
'aptitude' for 'apt' in your normal usage and 90% of the commands work
the same.

so you could do a:
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude upgrade

i think 'dist-upgrade' is something else.  am not at a machine right now
to see for myself.

granted i haven't run Ubuntu in a while, but even then i was not a fan
of Synaptic.  it's the first thing i remove from all my Debian installs.
 i've found that when people keep seeing "you have FOO packages that can
be updated" it gets them antsy.

currently (well since last year) running Debian "Unstable" on my own
machine with no problems.
