VMWare ESX is NOT...repeat NOT...Linux. Never has been. The best way I
can think of to explain it is as follows:

Once upon a time, Linux was used to load the VMWare kernel, much as
MS-DOS was used to load Novell Netware back in the day. That is no
longer even the case. VMWare ESX is a distinct operating system. The
confusion is a result of their choice of a Linux virtual machine to
act as the built in console, through which administrative tasks are
performed. Even that is no longer necessarily the case, depending on
which version you are using.
