To add: there is still some controversy about the kernel modules
vmware requires to be built to run under Linux.

Also, they have some stand-alone big server projects that at one time
were using a native Linux kernel on the hardware layer. That Linux
code has supposedly been removed from their products in order to
protect their "IP".
