There is a way to force it to behave. It is possible to configure Outlook to really do text only email for send and receive by default even when the received email is in html. You have to make some menu selections and apply a registry hack. 

I only point this out as there are some on the list that don't get a choice and are only allowed to use Outlook at work. I even discovered that it can be overridden on a per message basis when an email is unreadable except in html or you have to respond to someone's html email with html to preserve formatting. 

I'll share the hack with whoever is interested. I would assume offline as this is a Linux list.
