Chris,

I'm pretty sure he is saying that ESX is a custom built Linux Distro
that has the VMware support built in automatically.  ie. It is a
turnkey VMware distro.

Further the ESX distro has been tuned to be highly secure.  Anything
you build yourself, may or may not be as secure.
