with an external "modem" all you need is a working ethernet card. It's
been a long time since I've seen a card that lacks Linux support (other
than funky laptops and screaming new versions of high speed devices.
Pretty much any NIC at MicroCenter will work.

There are internal PCI DSL cards. They well supported by a maker called
Sangoma. However, they require an intimate knowledge of DSL/WAN
protocols to setup. Unless you have a very heavy background in telecom
infrastructure, you don't want to go that route.

You don't need a router with only one PC.
