[ale] Accessing an MP3 player from Linux

Beware that some more recent MP3 players are not in fact USB mass storage
devices but instead use a hideousity called "Media Transfer Protocol"
("MTP") ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_Transfer_Protocol ). This is
essentially a Windows Media protocol which is designed to facilitate the use
of DRM. It's possible to get your linux box to work with this stuff ( see
for example http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/intrepid/man1/mtpfs.html ),
but it's a PITA and my recourse was to return the gizmo to the store and buy
a working one. Unfortunately the box often doesn't tell you this level of
information about the player.
