[ale] Question about cable modem connections

Jim,

I've had great success getting IE6 running on Ubuntu. Should work for you
too.

A windows box isn't technically "required" to get the cable connection
setup. However, that's all their techs know. I've found that most insist
on playing with networking settings, if for no other reason than to look
like they know what they're doing ... and most really don't. However, since
the laptop will acquire it's networking info via DHCP, just preconfigure
your laptop according, install IE6 (IE7 is buggy and in beta), and hope for
the best. Yes a router is ideal, but it won't help with the setup process
one bit. During a Comcast installation in April, the tech looked at me with
blank eyes when I told him I'd be using my Ubuntu laptop for the setup. All
he really needed was IE ... and ALOT hand holding and pats on the back and
assurances that it would in fact work. And it did.

Best Regards,
Ken Price
