[ale] IMAP, or disconnected

ok, I want to take the plunge and switch to IMAP ( I think..) I have my laptop 
that I travel with, and I'd like to get my personal mail while on the road, 
and I'd like to check my business email on my desktop, but still get it on my 
laptop..
what exactly do I need to setup?
I'm running Debian, and I use kmail. WHen I go to add an account, it gives me 
2 choices, IMAP and disconnected IMAP. is there a short answer as to the 
difference & why I'd select one over the other??
 a nice HOW-TO maybe?? Last time I tried to setup an IMAP account my domain 
host blocked my access to email for the weekend ( always happens on 
Friday..), something about a PC was checking email every second...
