It speeds up reads and writes are at the same rate as writing to  a single
drive. There may be a imperceptable difference in single drive write and
mirrored write to two drives on separate controllers. There will be a slow
down writing to two drive on the same controller. Depending on the system
(IDE, SATA or SCSI) the slowdown will be as bad a Nx (N is number of drives)
for IDE, up to better performance with SCSI (<Nx) with SATA in between.
