All went well until I did the pon.  That didn't work.  Dmesg output:

Compaq 2610 running Hardy.  I'm stuck with XP.  The wireless driver for 
the 4318 doesn't work on this laptop.  I got it working in Edgy but all 
the distros disappeared so I upgraded to Hardy.  Now I'm screwed.  I 
even bought the Linuxant product but so far it isn't working either. 
Unless I'm near a wired ethernet I'm limited to XP.

Hardy had been very network unfriendly to me.
