[ale] Synaptic problems

Try using apt-get instead:
Close synaptic
Open an xterm
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get update

(see "man apt-get" for more info)
apt-get [-hvs] [-o=config string] [-c=file] {[update] | [upgrade] | 
[dselect-upgrade] | [install pkg...] |
               [remove pkg...] | [source pkg...] | [build-dep pkg...] | 
[check] | [clean] | [autoclean] | [autoremove]}
