Not quite true -- it's actually ">4GB per process", as x86 CPUS (P6 and 
newer) have supported up to 64GB (IIRC) through use of the PAE 
extension.  Only high-end server motherboards ever supported this much 
RAM though.

The "no benefit without >4G RAM" rule held... until x86-64 came along.

x86-64 vs x86 doubles the number of GPRs available (from 8 to 16 -- 
other 32/64-bit CPUs typically have at least 32) This can make an 
incredible difference in performance, especially on computationally- 
intensive code.
