I create and use PHP, .jsp and compiled java. If you are just beginning in
the web world, PHP is usually (not always) much easier to work with, and
is supported by most *nix based web hosters "out of the box". It's
productive, useful and widely supported. It's not inherently elegent
or even necessarily a good programming language. It's a great tool.

Java is incredibly powerful, and unless you have some experience or
training in real programming and OOP, as cryptic and obtuse as it gets
in common use.

As for "lucrative".. Sigh.. unfortunately. Not for good reasons.
CIO/CTO's got on the Java bandwagon, often for good reasons
initially, but found it just as expensive and hard to support as
.NET and other obtuse and bloated web programming environments.
So, once an expensive commitement has been made, they throw money
at it to keep it going. Java will, however, do things that few other
web enabled languages will do. You don't need that power for a blog site.

Joomla's a good place to start, but you may also find it just as easy to
create your own CMS (Content Management System) or templating system
as figuring it out.
