Actually if you follow the OLPC project the increase in cost actually comes
down to two very failed policies of the project...their original belief that
they would only sell to governments(in batches of 1 to 3 million) and their
refusal to sell to western countries. Both of these policies have changed in
the last month as their largest order previously was a private buyer,in
Mexico for 250,000 units (the guy that owns COMPUSA ironically enough)..

Alll of that reality aside the OLPC really is more impressive than the Asus.
Factor in the fact they EVERY review of the unit involving children has
shown the kids can generally figure the XO out faster than their adult
counterparts, the significant increase in battery performance over the Asus
(or any other notebook for that matter), the perhaps oversaid but true
revolutionary backlit LCD that you can read in direct sunlight AND rather
indesctuctable outer shell of the XO and the choice becomes pretty clear
pretty quick.

While I find the buy 1 get 1 policy somewhat...objectionable the basic
premise of the unit is still a good thing and I most likley will get one for
my child if they do actually put them on sale in November as they are saying
they will.
