[ale] How do I get to run level 3? Ubuntu 6.10

Are you installing the official Nvidia drivers?  What you can try is this:

CTRL-ALT-F1 to get to a prompt

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop to stop the display manager and X

Execute the installer and upon successful completion:
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

I'm not in front of my Ubuntu machine at the moment, but that should take
care of it.  Here's a link to a decent thread on Ubuntuforums.org that
