I've been wondering about the desktop placement of things myself.  There
are little issues like this with single display systems, but they also
present themselves on dual display systems (even moreso; they limit the
grid to the size of the smaller screen, which is terribly annoying).  I
have yet to find a configuration option for it, but admittedly I have
not looked that hard.  I know that some systems have a "snap to grid" or
something like that, and it is probably something buried in gconf or a
control panel somewhere...
