[ale] Linux, DVD, and AVI/MPG conversion

Thanks.  Time is not the issue.  The compilation of files will have to 
play across a broad spectrum of previously purchased DVD players for 
standard televisions. 

I was hoping to find some folks with personal experience doing this that 
might be able to assist in shortening the learning curve as much as 
possible.  Even though I have used Linux since it first came across my 
system while running Fidonet back in 1994, I am still much more at home 
with the simple text prompt from bash than I am with graphics or anyting 
to do with them.
