[ale] Ubuntu no go

OK, I got wise and took off the splash and quiet options. So I can see
what's going on. There are a couple of dozen lines of output, the last
dealing with "found ..... usb port....". Pretty much what you might
expect. No error messages, but at the end it dumps me into an ash shell
and says something about "can't access tty, job control turned off".

Now I'm googling and finding there is a serious kernel bug that won't
allow the chip set on this motherboard to boot later kernels. That
answers another question as to why my recompiled xen kernel wouldn't
boot. It looked like there were no pata devices, and this kernel bug is
just that problem.

OK I won't waste any more time, but if anyone is interested in a dual
core intel on a mother board with a JMicron chip set, you might want to
think twice. See
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.17/+bug/57502 for
more info.

Thanks,
Jim.
