[ale] SuSE 10.2, can't log in as root

I am running 10.2. I did a new install, onto a nice new DELL XPS core-duo 
platform. I copied my old /home info over. Running KDE.
sound is working just fine, but this wasn't an upgrade. The mixer is 
different, and only has 2 sliders-volume and digital.
