You don't necessarily need a network printer. If you want to put it in
a central location that isn't near a computer, a network printer would
certainly be easiest. But, there are devices that act as print servers
to which you can connect any old USB or LPT printer. I use a Motorola
WPS870G for this purpose; I do not recommend this specific device. If
you don't mind your printering being attached to your Linux box, and
your Linux box being on all the time, then sharing the printer via
Samba is the cheapest solution.

Personally, I like HP printers due to them being well supported under
Linux. Take a look at http://www.linuxprinting.org/ before deciding on
a new printer if you don't want to go with HP.
