[ale] external USB drives, brand recommendations?

Pete,

Hope your doing good. And Merry Christmas.

Anyway:
The quality of external USB drives seems to have rapidly dropped in
the last 6 months. Maybe because they have moved to using Sata drives
inside and the USB <--> Sata electronics is still buggy.

ie. We just bought some Buffalo's. They did not work reliably even
from Windows.

Ended up opening the case and directly connecting the drives via sata.
Want some barely used cases? (Have at least 2.)

Not sure what to recommend, but make sure the recommendation is from
very recent experience, or maybe find something that is still parallel
IDE inside the case. Don't remember ever having problems with that
variety regardless of make/model.

Greg

A: Send in the drive for warranty and kiss your data goodbye, B: otherwise, the official recommendation is an extremely expensive data recovery outfit they've contracted with. Lastly, C: deep-six your warranty and open the case.
