I bought one a while ago.  I did not try hacking it, just using it.

Did not like it much. The only usable interface is the NIC.  ie. The
USB port is for expansion only.

iirc, when you hook it up to another PC, you had to install special
software (drivers?) to be able to see the drive.  I think I only tried
it with a Windows client.

Anyway, it was the last NIC only external storage I plan to buy.  It
was just too inflexible.
