[ale] Ubuntu gnome session hosed

when I start a nwe session, I get lots of windows similar to this:

Sorry, the program "gnome-terminal" closed unexpectedly
.....
then a check box  that says: ignore future crashes of this program version

and a CLOSE WINDOW box.


there was another window that says this:
There was an error starting the GNME Settings Daemon.
SOme things such as themes, souinds, or background settings may not work 
correctly.
The Settings Daemon restarted too many times.
GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.
