[ale] Installing Linux on Compaq

It's a good idea to backup the boot-sector just in case before
installing linux on a box with an existing Windows partition.  Cheap
insurance.  Windows is a bit funny when it comes to discovering the
disk geometry (cylinders,heads,sectors,tracks) information.  Linux
gets this information soley from the disk-drive itself.  Windows uses
a combination of disk-drive and bios.  So using linux to slice up your
disk may lead to incorrect values:

I imagine you could have windows installer screw you linux disk up
under the same false assumptions.
