[ale] HOW2 install BellSouth DSL with a USB link rather than Ethernet ?

 My machine's ethernet card is tied up already... linking it to the local
lan's hub, so
I'd like to use the USB port to connect the BellSouth provided
        Westell Wirespeed Dual Connect
modem.

The modem's light comes right on with an ethernet connection..... but even
though
the modem is identified by "usbdevs" as address 2:  /dev/ugen0, [the OHCI
hub is addr 1]
the modem light never comes on when connected as a USB device.

The kernel config file identifies  "cdce" as a USB ethernet device, whatever
that means,
but there's no such device in /dev.

Anyone been down this road already  ?
