Debian is probably *not* going to be very "windows like" ;-) Kubuntu would 
be though. And I see you already have an offer...

Naturally going to evangelize what I know best. Mandriva is newbie 
friendly, and has one of the best installers out there. The distro its 
self is not that bad. (No distro is perfect...) Free version is not 
deliberately crippled, but does lack proprietary stuff such as pre 
compiled Nvidia drivers that come with paid versions. Work around is quite 
painless the *second* time around:)

Still have my DVD ISO of 2006 and can burn you a copy if your intersted.
