[ale] if 'dpkg' is removed, will this entirely disable all up-dating/grading & apt-getfunctions?

I'm not James but I'll step in here. You want to install the
kernel-source. As in 'apt-get install kernel-source-2.6.17'. You'll
then most likely want to install the following packages if you have not
already:

build-essentials
kernel-package

Then follow the instructions at
http://www.debian.org/doc/FAQ/ch-kernel.en.html

If you use the kernel-package tools to build a kernel-image deb, then
you'll be able to install using dpkg.

Do you know what driver your ethernet card uses? It may be as simple as
adding the driver name to /etc/modules to have it loaded on boot. And
modprobe <modulename> to load it now.
