It could get worse, as I'm quite behind (about 6500 messages) on reading ALE
messages, and I've been kind of catching up backwards.

Actually, my brother does this rather consistently.  He's often about 2000 or
so emails behind in his email reading (and writing) (except for a period last
year when he hurt his back and had nothing to do but lie in bed and read
email), and the mailing lists he frequents have occasional jokes about him and
his 'time machine'.
