At least for me, installing it in Mozilla or Firefox's default install
plugins directory has never worked.  I put it in
$HOME/.mozilla/.../plugins and it seems to usually work.  You can double
check, of course, by typing about:plugins in the window for the URL, and
it will tell you if it loaded the Java plugin or not.

Also, I always symlink, never copy.  Don't know if that actually makes a
difference or not, but it's what's worked for me in the past, so I stick
to it.
