Jerry,

Thank you for your reply.

Why do you recommend GRUB over LILO, please ?

I did an "fdisk /dev/hda" and have discovered that the
partition table's boundaries are wrong, i.e. they overlap
and are wrong sized.

1 overlaps 2,
2 overlaps 3,
3 overlaps 5, and
5 overlaps 6.
Also, logical 5 not entirely in 4.

The original layout [in MB], in which all was well, was:

Minor Start End Type Filesys Size

    / .031 1968,75 primary ext2 1968.719
    /boot 1968.75 3971.46 primary ext2 2002.71
    /var 3971.46 5940.21 primary ext2 1968.749
    [ext] 5940.211 8063.50 extended 2123.296
    /misc 5940.242 7908.96 logical ext2 1968.718
    swap 7908.992 8063.507 logical linux-swap 154.515

How can I change MB to cylinders, so that I can change the existing
configuration back to the original, as above indicated in MB ?

I am assuming that after translating the above table to cylinders, that I can
then alter the existing layout using fdisk, to return the disk to it's original
pattern, hence reenabling LILO.

Appreciatively,
Courtney

  use GRUB if possible.
if not, (if my memory serves)

a.. enable LBA for the HD in BIOS and/or inside lilo.conf.
b.. Or, make sure / partition is under 1024 cylinder.

How do I cure this, please ?

    Thanks once more,

    Courtney
