[ale] Identify process hammering disk

You may have checked this stuff already James but here are a couple ideas:
Run top while the disk is thrashing and see if there are any processes that
stand out. Check dmesg and make sure there are no weird errors.

If your system is low on ram or running a TON of apps, that can often cause
it to swap to disk too much.
