I would put the drive in a USB box but not close up the box and then
park the thing in the coldest place in the fridge for an hour or so
inside a freezer rated ziplock bag with some freshly heated then cooled
chalk to absorb any moisture from the bag while it cools down. The
humidity in the fridge is already pretty low. You should be able to
close the door on the cables with out any harm to anything.

I tried this trick once with the freezer with bad results I attributed
to being too cold. 40F is towards the lower end of most HD operating
temps.
