VMWare 5.0 and SUSE 9.3 work together very well.  You do need to have the vmwaredsp-1.3 package and possibly the vmware-any-any-update90 package from http://ftp.cvut.cz/vmware/ to make sure that vmware will install and run nicely.  You do need to install the kernel source first before installing the vmware rpm.  To prep the kernel source so vmware will be able to compile the kernel modules correctly you have to:

cd /usr/src/linux
cp /proc/config.gz config.gz
gunzip config.gz
mv config .config
make prepare-all 

install vmware and run the vmware-config.pl script.  Then install the vmwaredsp-1.3 package and start vmware with "vmwarearts" instead of "vmware".

You'll get perfect sound under artsd in suse that way.
