[ale] no path when starting window manager

Normally, when I start any shell for any user on my machine, /opt/kde/bin is
included in the path. It's there in /etc/profile. But when I start a new
installation of KDE from kdm, it only opens an xterm. If I type
in /opt/kde/bin/startkde then the the window manager starts up, but only
then. If I type "echo $PATH" in that xterm, of course /opt/kde/bin is not
found. Any ideas why?
