[ale] bootsplash configuration and .spl files?

I can generate a new message (and bootlogo) file using the make files
that come with gfxboot source package from suse and my image.pcx
file...but it does not show up...I just loose the suse image...if I
remove the .spl files everything that would have an image is
black...interesting note is that the meassage file that is there by
default is just a text file...I can edit with vi and see my changes if
I do a text mode install...another note, I need to use 9.2...the 9.3
boot/loader area has some loose .jpgs that you can swap out and get
mostly there (still have to modify the scripts it uses to do the
showing of the "welcome" text stuff)....I saw a comment in a syslinux
changelog that said "added support for reading in <resolution>.spl
files...image no longer has to be in initrd" the modification was by a
suse guy in 2003 (?)...but that is all I could find...I have posted to
the suseautoinstall list but have not heard anything back...I may try
a hybrid of the 9.2 and 9.3 systems and see what happens

thanks for your comments!
