I actually messed with this when it was released.  It worked but it was
slow due to the nature of gmail.  One thing we thought of doing was to
use multiple gmail accounts (I have 50, want some????) and RAID5 them.
You could do this as well with the LVM.  Just make sure to lay them out
right so that you get the speed from the stripes.
