[ale] Drive Erasure

I actually had a similar problem last night with a (nearly (i killed it the 
rest of the way)) dead wd 60g unit. In the middle of running dd if=/dev/zero 
of=/dev/hda1, linux reported back 'ide0 reset, success!'

I couldn't figure out how to specify X bytes to copy, though it was late, 
but I wanted to try to fill the driev before ditching it.
