I use gammu, formerly known as mygnokii, for SMS services.

	http://www.mwiacek.com/gsm/soft/gammu.html

You can run gammu in a daemon mode and just drop spool files for it to
pick up and send and it will pull down incoming SMS for you and spool
them. Obviously, that requires a dedicated SMS phone. So, I've got a
little dedicated SMS gateway I've set up for certain special projects.
I'm using a Nokia 6610 phone from T-Mobile. And SMS does work between
providers.

As it so happens, I ended up going with gammu, because it was the only
one that properly supported this particular phone model. Gnokii claimed
to but there were structure difference that made half the functions NOT
work. At least that was the case when I last tried it. Gammu worked
out of the box and seems to support a lot more phones. Can do all sorts
of other, non-sms, stuff with the GSM / Nokia phones as well.

	Mike
