you can look up packages with:

apt-cache search foo

where foo is a package name (like "gKrellm") or a package type (like "browser").

you might have to pipe it to less to see all the entries.  (apt-cache search foo | less)

other ways are to install and use Synaptic (graphical apt) or Aptitude (text based apt)

i haven't used these (Synaptic/Aptitude) but hear that they are nice.
