Most image formats are already compressed, thus you'll not gain a lot by 
compressing them again.  For example, I just compressed a jpeg file with 
'gzip -9' here is the difference:


-rwxr-xr-x    1 esoteric users     1440619 2004-01-09 15:56 dsc00253.jpg
-rw-r--r--    1 esoteric users     1438167 2004-01-10 08:59 foo.gz

Note the very little gain in space.
