Must be Earthlink, it does work with Mandrake 10.1 and a 2.6 kernel.
(2.6.8.1-12mdk) Just shut down Smoothwall, reconnected directly (serial) to
the working USR external and installed KPPP. All configuration done
manually within KPPP (No wizards or command line) Account name and dial up
number on the accounts tab, user name and password in connect box. From
previous experience all other settings were left in the default setting
except one.

It defaulted to /dev/ttyS1 and a query (within KPPP) showed empty fields, so
I next tried /dev/ttyS0 and query showed strings. (Got lucky, has taken
more than one try in the past) Tried to connect and after a very long wait
it failed. Second try and again an extra long (30 seconds) time to even
initialize then it connected normally.

Have seen similar first time failures and should have tried resetting the
modem and connecting several more times, but I'm lazy and was in a hurry to
get the network back up;-)
