I put Debian on anything that's not nailed shut.  Fire up a Knoppix disk 
and check the hardware, look on "linux on laptops" for any other 
information and other's experiences, and enjoy your laptop.

BTW sorry about the carpet, James said he could juggle those flaming 
tennis balls...
