The best idea would have been to log into a remote console server that your
box is attached to and do the stop and restart there.  That way you'll have
connectivity to the machine throughout the process.

Working on a box without a console server is like working on a highwire
without a net.  You may be very good and not need it, but when you do,
nothing else will do.
