[ale] Should SMTP die?

The openness of SMPTP makes it possible to send millions of spam e-mails 
to people who don't want them and make the sender nearly impossible to 
trace. It also makes it possible to spread viruses with incredible ease. 
Do we need a replacement for SMTP? I was wondering what this group thinks.
