The reason the mailing lists are down is because it was the listserv server that was hacked...

Well nothing "new" exactly, but I if I understood correctly Debian.org was
going through _all_ their systems with a fine tooth comb.  I now assume
(yes, I know what that means) that they are looking at the mail server and
that is why it is down.

I haven't experienced trouble with debian before and (honestly) I like the
fact that they have apparently initiated a "lock down" state until they
ferret out the problem.  I have full knowledge that _nothing_ is totally
secure and incidents such as what is happening to debian.org and their
reaction actually give me confidence in their distro.

Had this been (yet another) Microsoft problem it would have taken three
years and a court order to get them to fix it and not promote it as an
upgrade you need to purchase (98se anyone?).
