[ale] USB pen drive killed?

I have done some "bad" things to my pen drive.  I went back to windows and reformatted the pen drive.  One "bad" thing you can do is pull the pen from the linux box without unmounting  the drive.  I have had mandrake 9.0 completely crash.  I had to reimage the box.  It never did recover.

That's my fear.  I will try the drive on my home system and see if it responds 
differently.
